Toronto Maple Leafs forward John Tavares understands just how good his team is this season and that is why a win against the Florida Panthers doesn't faze him.
John Tavares scored his 36th goal of the season last night as the Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Florida Panthers in a game that secured the team a playoff spot.
The win also allowed the Leafs to create some separation in the Atlantic Division title race. They are three points up on the Tampa Bay Lightning, who have a game in hand.
With the seven games left in the season, it is go time for this Maple Leafs team and they seem as motivated as ever to show the world they can beat the best teams in the NHL.
John Tavares talks Leafs making the playoffs
It is not going to be an easy task and despite making the playoffs, Tavares understands that job is nowhere close to being finished.
While speaking to reporters, the forward admitted as much and in a way, poured some cold water on the Leafs' latest accomplishment.
"It's a long grind. It's a special thing to play for the Stanley Cup. We're excited to have the opportunity to again, earned our ticket there, and continue to work to finish as high as we can and make the most of the opportunity."
The Leafs have made the playoffs in nine straight seasons but have only won one playoff series. Now, they have an opportunity to break the curse and maybe get to the Eastern Conference Finals.
This is a team with the talent and depth to make the Stanley Cup Finals but whether or not they actually compete that hard, still remains to be seen.
Fans have been yearning for something to cheer about for decades and this season has proven that it might be coming soon.
But for now, patience is warranted as this Leafs team still needs to have a strong finale to the regular season.
