Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews spoke out on Sunday night as reporters continued to dig into whether or not he played the season with an injury.
Auston Matthews had a bit of a rough season with the Toronto Maple Leafs, even if his production was solid compared to the rest of the league.
Last season, the captain had 69 goals but was only able to manage half of that in 2024-25. He missed some games with an injury, and in the playoffs, it felt like he was dealing with something.
Is Auston Matthews dealing with an injury?
However, the response from Matthews was actually quite worrisome. He said he didn't know what was wrong and didn't even want to address it.
"I don't know. I'm not really going to address that right now. You go out there and just try to compete and give your all, and that's what I was trying to do."
Ultimately, the Leafs have a lot to figure out in the offseason, and one has to wonder if Matthews will be seeking treatment for whatever he has going on.
However, as it stands, fans are mostly worried about what is going to happen to
Mitch Marner and
John Tavares, who will become free agents on July 1st.
Considering the fact that the Core Four has had zero playoff success in the last eight years, it is likely that general manager Brad Treliving just blows it up.
Whether or not Auston Matthews approves of this probably does not matter. He should have played his best hockey when it mattered the most.
