Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz has been placed on the LTIR, however, fans should not get too worried as there is a very good reason for all of this.
Anthony Stolarz has been out for over a month with a knee injury but according to reports, he is going to be back in the lineup in about a week's time.
Anthony Stolarz lands on LTIR
The LTIR placement is retroactive to the 12th of December and it has led to some questions about whether or not the goalie is actually close to returning.
Thankfully, those questions were cleared up very recently by reporter David Alter, who explained what exactly is going on.
Essentially, by calling up
Nikita Grebenkin, the Maple Leafs have put themselves over the salary cap. To get some relief, Stolarz has been put on the LTIR.
Later this week,
Matthew Knies is expected to return to the lineup which will allow Grebenkin to go back down to the Marlies, while Stolarz can be taken off of the injured reserve.
That said, we could see Stolarz in action as soon as next weekend against the Edmonton Oilers.
Or, we could even see him get in against the Calgary Flames. Either way, it is going to be nice to have him back on the ice.
There is a real sense that Anthony Stolarz could be the starter for the Maple Leafs heading into the postseason, although there are no guarantees.
Either way, the Leafs will be at full strength in terms of goaltending soon and that is something to be excited about.
