Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies is officially a restricted free agent, and as of July 1st, he could be subjected to offer sheets, which would be disastrous.
In the postseason, Knies had five goals in 13 games and was responsible for some big moments. Ultimately, he has become a fan favorite, and the franchise would love to keep him around for the next decade.
Is Matthew Knies re-signing with the Toronto Maple Leafs?
Knies has made it clear that he has no intentions of signing an offer sheet. That said, the Leafs still want to get an extension done before July 1st to avoid any kind of drama.
In fact, a new report from
James Mirtle suggests that things are going well between Knies and the Leafs. By all accounts, the Leafs are confident that a deal will be done fairly soon.
And the Leafs remain confident they will get Matthew Knies inked to a reasonable second contract without any offer-sheet drama.
The big contention here is going to be the term. Knies would probably prefer a short-term deal that would allow him to make more money sooner.
However, the Leafs would likely prefer to lock him up now for eight years at a price that will be considered a bargain by the time it expires.
Whether or not the Leafs get what they want, still remains to be seen. They also have other negotiations to deal with, including a contract for
John Tavares.
Overall, this is going to be an interesting offseason for the Leafs, and the fans are just praying that it goes as smoothly as possible.
