Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is a prolific goal-scorer, and based on current projections, the forward will surpass Alex Ovechkin when it's all over.
Auston Matthews is one of the best players in the NHL right now, and there is no denying that he will be a Hall of Famer when all is said and done.
Now, Ovi has over 900 goals to his name, and he has a real opportunity to get to 1000, provided he plays a few more seasons in the NHL.
Auston Matthews vs. Alex Ovechkin
As for Matthews, there have been questions about whether or not he is someone who could one day surpass Ovechkin. After all, Ovi never had a 69-goal season.
Well, a new statistic from Leafs Latest proves that Matthews passing Ovi is a real possibility, even if it feels a bit far-fetched.
In their first 629 NHL games, Ovechkin had 378 goals. Meanwhile, Matthews had a whopping 401, which proves that Matthews is on a better trajectory than Ovi.
Not to mention, Matthews was younger during his first season in the league, which means he could end up playing more games than Ovechkin.
If Matthews can bounce back from the 33-goal season he had in 2024-25, then there is a real possibility that Ovechkin will feel some heat over the next 10 years.
For now, however, Ovi should simply enjoy his record, which won't be touched for many years.
Besides, if Auston Matthews should have any goal in mind, it is winning a Stanley Cup with the Toronto Maple Leafs.
