The Toronto Maple Leafs have had two solid goalies in Anthony Stolarz and Joseph Woll but now, the franchise must make a very critical decision very soon.
With the NHL playoffs on the horizon, Craig Berube must make a decision about who his starting goalie is going to be.
Anthony Stolarz and
Joseph Woll have split the net all season long and yet somehow, a decision has yet to be made on who the number one guy is.
Anthony Stolarz or Joseph Woll
While some may think that the choice for who should be the starting goaltender is difficult, it actually really isn't.
By now, there is enough of a sample size to definitively argue that Anthony Stolarz has been the better goaltender this season.
He leads the team in goals-against average with 2.34 and he has a save percentage of .921. This is in stark contrast to Joseph Woll, who has a goals-against average of 2.78 and a save percentage of .905.
Although Woll does have more playoff experience than Stolarz, the latter has played on a Stanley Cup winning team and knows what it takes to win.
Furthermore, there have been times this season when Woll just had a really poor outing and Stolarz has just been a bit more consistent.
His save percentage alone is enough for Berube to realize that Stollie needs to be the guy moving forward.
Of course, if he falters in the playoffs, then they can easily move over to Woll.
But for now, going into the postseason, the Maple Leafs just make this decision easy on themselves and trust the numbers. After all, there is a lot riding on this.
