Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is looking for a contract extension, however, negotiations won't take place until the season is officially over.

The Toronto Maple Leafs and Mitch Marner have been a great match over the years, however, it could all come to an end this summer.
With a career-year about to be wrapped up, it is believed that the superstar forward is going to enter free agency and test the market.
Some teams could be willing to give Marner $14 million per season, however, it would appear as though the Leafs are trying to give him something more akin to $12.5 million.

How much will Mitch Marner make in Free Agency?

In a new report from insider Lyle Richardson, some good points were made pertaining to the Marner situation and what makes most sense for both sides.
Essentially, he believes that the Leafs are going to re-sign Mitch Marner because there aren't any other players on the market.
For Richardson, the only way these two end up not reuniting for eight years is if Marner starts to ask for more money than Auston Matthews, which seems to be a boundary the Leafs are not willing to cross.
The Maple Leafs will likely re-sign Marner unless his asking price goes ridiculously high. They're better off with him than without because there's no one in this summer's UFA or trade markets to replace him, and as Siegel and Mirtle acknowledged, most of the best players in next summer's free-agent market will be re-signed by their current clubs.

If Marner proves too expensive or another early playoff exit leads to big roster changes, they'll definitely search for a reasonable replacement this summer. They could also use the money they intended to pay Marner to add two good, affordable players to boost their roster depth.

The Maple Leafs and Marner have been great together and while the playoff performances haven't been there, that does not mean they shouldn't remain a pair.
Quite frankly, the Leafs need Marner and Marner needs the Leafs. If he were to leave, he would be going to a bad team and that is not ideal.
Hopefully, both sides make the right decision that will end up making the fans very happy.
