Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him this offseason, and it seems like trading for a center is topping his to-do list.
Acquiring Scott Laughton at the trade deadline was supposed to fix the vast majority of their issues. However, this turned out not to be the case. Instead, their problems just got worse.
While Auston Matthews and John Tavares were established as their top two centers, they couldn't seem to find anyone in the bottom six who could fill out the role in an efficient capacity. Even Tavares is someone that the team would prefer moving to the wing, or even centering the third line.
As a result, the Leafs are going to have to look towards the trade market this offseason to improve, and it is probably going to cost them an arm and a leg.
After winning a Stanley Cup with the Colorado Avalanche, Kadri is in the midst of a contract with the Calgary Flames. He has four years left on this deal, and the average annual value is $7 million.
Meanwhile, some of the other names on the list included Phillip Danault and another former Leaf in Ryan O'Reilly. An interesting center here is William Karlsson, who could be a trade chip in a sign-and-trade involving Mitch Marner. The Las Vegas Golden Knights want Marner, and getting rid of Karlsson would give them salary cap relief.
Whatever the case may be, this is going to be a very interesting offseason for the Leafs, who have to do something here.
If they don't, then the fans are going to be extremely disappointed, and they may just lose faith with the front office.
