Toronto Maple Leafs Facing Competition from the Montreal Canadiens Amid Top-Six Forward Pursuit

Throughout the entire summer, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been looking for a top-six forward, and now, Brad Treliving is facing competition from the Montreal Canadiens.
The Toronto Maple Leafs need a top-six forward to replace Mitch Marner, who left the team back in July for the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
Unfortunately, the market is too thin right now, and there aren't any free agents to go around. As for the trade market, the Leafs just don't have the assets to make something work.
With the Atlantic Division getting a whole lot better, the Maple Leafs are starting to lose a bit of ground, and one of the teams gunning for them is the Montreal Canadiens.

According to Marco D'Amico of RG.com, the Canadiens are actually looking to take a big swing in the middle of the season.
They want to go after a top-six forward, which is exactly what the Toronto Maple Leafs want. The only difference is the Canadiens actually have the assets to spend.
The Canadiens will be active on the trade market again in-season if they can't secure a top-six piece before training camp; one source has hinted that the team has already sized up a few teams and will kick the can with them again down the line
Months ago, the Canadiens and the Maple Leafs were seemingly in the running for Jordan Kyrou, although this didn't end up happening.
Other top six forwards out there right now are guys like Bryan Rust, who would certainly pair nicely with Matthew Knies and even Auston Matthews.
Going into this season, the Leafs should be weary of the Canadiens, who are probably going to take a major leap after making the playoffs.
Only time will tell how both teams fair in what should be a season for the ages.
