Throughout the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs, some surprising free agent signings have been made, and the fanbase is extremely opinionated on this.

When it comes to signing free agents, there is a lot of research that goes into it. Teams don't just give players contracts for the hell of it.
If the Toronto Maple Leafs sign you, it is because they believe you can actively contribute to the roster. Unfortunately, some of these signings just don't pan out.
Over the last decade or so, there have been plenty of Maple Leafs signings that have not panned out. While some have been phenomenal, others have been regretful.
This came just one day following the vote for best free agent signing, which, as you can imagine, went to none other than John Tavares.

David Clarkson stays hated by Toronto Maple Leafs fans

As you can see down below, the fans decided to vote for David Clarkson, a forward who signed with the team back in 2013, and was an immediate bust.
In 118 games with the Maple Leafs, Clarkson had just 26 points and over 180 penalty minutes. His time in Toronto was notoriously awful, and the fans did not love him.
Having said that, it is easy to see why many Leafs fans wouldn't have the fondest memories about Clarkson and his brief time with the team.
Ultimately, the Leafs will be hoping that their signings from this season prove to be a lot more beneficial for the team.
As for Clarkson, he finished his career in Columbus in 2016, and his numbers reflect a player who had diminished quite significantly.
