There is no hiding the fact that the Toronto Maple Leafs are interested in acquiring Connor McDavid, although the Edmonton Oilers have something to say about it.
Connor McDavid is going to be a free agent in 2026, although the Oilers could avoid such a catastrophe if they sign the forward to an extension before then.
There is a lot of fanfare around a potential McDavid free agency cycle, as he would immediately become the most sought-after forward of all time.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are considered to be frontrunners for McDavid, but only if he opts to leave the team that drafted him. Either way, Leafs fans are paying attention.

Over the last few weeks, there have been reports that the Oilers and McDavid have been engaging in some serious contract talks.
In a new report from 2 Mutts Hockey Podcast, the Leafs got bad news, as it seems all but confirmed that McDavid will be signed by the end of August.
We are hearing that the contract extension for Connor McDavid will most likely happen after the Team Canada Orientation Camp which is August 26th to the 28th in Calgary.
The plan is to announce the contract extension before the Captain Skates begin & Training Camp starts.
We believe it could be a 2 year deal or a 4 year deal as the Edmonton Oilers already know McDavid won't be signing an 8 year extension this time around.
The conversation on AAV has gone from $16M to around $17.5M from what we've been told.
The Oilers still have other work to do to make sure this extension happens & those things are being worked on over the next 3-4 weeks as Stan Bowman & Jeff Jackson have a busy August ahead of them.

Either way, the Leafs seem out on McDavid. Whether or not they were ever really in is something we may never know.
