With Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner looking towards a potential departure in free agency, NHL insider Chris Johnston believes the Leafs have a plan B.

Mitch Marner's value has never been higher thanks to his 102-point season during the 2024-25 campaign.
Unfortunately, he was not particularly great in the postseason, but we digress. He can test free agency as of July 1st, and there is a sense that this is exactly what he intends to do.
While the Maple Leafs could certainly offer him a lot of money, there are plenty of teams out there who are desperate and willing overpay the superstar winger.

What will the Maple Leafs do with Mitch Marner?

While speaking to TSN 1050, NHL insider Chris Johnston acknowledged Marner's situation with the Leafs and what is likely to happen next.
As it turns out, the Leafs are grappling with the idea of trading Marner's rights away. They would be able to do so before free agency, and it would allow them to get something in return if they know Marner is for sure leaving.
There's still 5 weeks where [Marner] is the property of the Maple Leafs. They control his rights and I'm sure they're going to use that time to at least engage in more conversations, see where things are at and maybe, ultimately, we're talking about them trading his rights at some point. I mean, I think that's premature to look at that. That's usually something that happens in the last week or so before July 1st, but I'm sure there's going to be some conversations between then and now. I don't think he came this far playing out his contract year to sign a new deal now. I just think he's of the mind to at least look at the open market.
It was reported that the Leafs may have a conversation with Marner this week to gauge what his true plans are for the offseason.
If the Leafs can get a solid answer about free agency, then they might just look to trade Marner's rights to the team he wants to go to.
Whatever the case may be, this is a difficult time for the Leafs organization, and change is, indeed, on the horizon.
Only time will tell whether or not Mitch Marner will ever play another game in a Leafs uniform.
