Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly has been wrapped up in numerous trade rumors, and Elliotte Friedman's latest report suggests there is smoke.
Morgan Rielly has been a good defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs over the years, but there is no doubt that he is starting to fade in comparison to his peers.
This past season with the Leafs, he was not able to sustain the level of play that fans have come to expect from him. Quite frankly, he was missing something.
Are the Maple Leafs trading Morgan Rielly?
In his latest column for Sportsnet,
Elliotte Friedman suggested that the Maple Leafs are trying their hardest to get themselves a forward who can replace
Mitch Marner.
As a result, there is a sense that the team may just go and trade a defenseman in order to make a forward acquisition possible.
The Maple Leafs wanted
Mason Marchment, and were disappointed not to get him. Toronto wild-card: to replace Marner, could they move a defenceman to get a forward?
Of course,
Oliver Ekman-Larsson probably makes the most sense when it comes to trading a defenseman with decent value.
But Morgan Rielly could be the best option. He is a defenseman who still has gas in the tank, but he just does not fit the Leafs' mould right now.
Overall, the defenseman struggled under Craig Berube, and if he is smart, he will waive that no-trade clause and understand the situation.
Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that will happen. $7.5 million per season for his style of play is a tough pill to swallow.
