Toronto Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews has always been proud of his Mexican heritage and as it turns out, the fans in Mexico love him back.
Auston Matthews is easily one of the best players in the entire National Hockey League and there is no doubt that the fans in Toronto love him.
However, it turns out that Matthews is an international star and much of this has to do with his Mexican heritage, which he has always displayed with a ton of pride.
His mother was born in Mexico and have grown up in Arizona, he always tried to pay homage to his mom as well as his background.

Interestingly enough, there was a large contingency of fans of Mexico who made the trip just to come see Auston take to the ice.
Fans from Mexico make the trip up to Anaheim to cheer on Auston Matthews and the Leafs in person.
Matthews' Mexican roots come from his mother, Ema Matthews, who was born and raised in Hermosillo, Mexico. Matthews grew up embracing his Mexican heritage, learning some Spanish and visiting family in Mexico. His background has made him a popular figure among Mexican hockey fans, helping grow interest in the sport there.
It is truly incredible to see this kind of thing as it proves that the game of hockey is growing all around the world.
While Mexico isn't the first country you think of when you think of hockey, there is no doubt that this is a sport that is making waves on the international Stage.
Countries like Kenya, Pakistan, and even Jamaica are getting their own teams which is pretty cool to see.
Having said that, we're sure Mexico will be cheering on Auston Matthews as his Leafs approach the playoffs, where expectations are higher than ever.
