Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews is a goal-scoring machine, and it should come as a surprise to no one that he is on the verge of franchise history.
Auston Matthews made his NHL debut less than 10 years ago. Regardless, he is already one of the best players in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Auston Matthews to surpass Mats Sundin
According to Leafs Latest on X, Matthews just needs 20 goals to officially surpass Sundin and take that top spot within the franchise.
What is truly unique about this feat, is the fact that once Matthews does it, he will become the only active player in the league to be the leading all-time goal-scorer of an Original Six team.
A reminder that Auston Matthews (401 goals) is just 20 away from passing Mats Sundin (420) for the most goals in Maple Leafs history.
No current NHL player holds the all-time goals or points record for any Original Six team - but Matthews has a chance to change that this season.
Auston Matthews is going to be looking to have a big season, especially after the disappointment he suffered last season.
He only had 33 goals, but he was suffering from a lingering injury, so at least he had some sort of excuse for his lack of production.
That said, he seems to be doing much better, and with
Mitch Marner gone, Matthews is going to have to carry the play and put his best foot forward.
By the midway point of the season, he will probably have surpassed Mats Sundin. We wonder if the former Leafs captain will be in attendance for that?
Matthews has a tough road ahead of him, but we cannot wait to watch him play this season.
