The Toronto Maple Leafs were going after St. Louis Blues captain Brayden Schenn at the trade deadline, but General Manager Doug Armstrong wouldn't allow it.

At the trade deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs were looking to improve at center, and GM Brad Treliving was thinking about Brayden Schenn for his third line.
The St. Louis Blues captain has 48 points in 78 games this season and is still showing some flashes of brilliance. Not to mention, the Craig Berube connection made it seem like a trade was possible.
However, Schenn was not made available and in the end, the Maple Leafs decided to go with Scott Laughton instead.

Brayden Schenn was pursued by the Toronto Maple Leafs

During an episode of Spittin Chiclets, Blues general manager spoke about Schenn and why the team opted not to trade him at the deadline.
At the end of the day, it all had to do with the team's run following the 4 Nations Face-Off and how the team put themselves on a playoff trajectory.
"Coming out of the Four Nations, our job as a management group is to have a plan and then you adjust to the information you're given. We said to teams that we're not playing to a calibre of hockey that's sustainable or successful. We have players that are going to be available, with the caveat of if we start winning games, things are going to change so if you want to buy, buy now. We ended up going on a little bit of a heater and we got to that last game and we said we were only going to make a hockey trade. We were not going to make a futures trade because the players had given us the information that's what was needed... The players had earned the right to play this out, so if we could have done a hockey trade, we would have done it."
The St. Louis Blues are now the hottest team going into the playoffs and a lot of teams around the league fear them, for very good reason.
That said, it makes sense why the Blues would want to keep their captain for themselves knowing he could be valuable in a potential cup run.
Whether or not the Blues go very far still remains to be seen. However, it is clear that this Blues team has some potential.
While it was disappointing for Leafs fans, you have to acknowledge how the Blues are absolutely killing it to end the season.
