Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is likely to go to free agency, and some fans are curious about whether or not the Leafs would trade his rights away.
Mitch Marner is going to be the biggest story of the offseason, and Toronto Maple Leafs fans are already preparing for him to leave for another team.
For instance, if the Leafs recognize that there is no way Marner stays, the team could trade his negotiating rights to a team that wants him before July 1st.
Is Mitch Marner leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs?
In the latest episode of '32 Thoughts' with Elliotte Friedman, a viewer asked whether or not Marner actually had the power to reject a trade involving his rights.
While no-trade clauses are mostly used for big asset trades, it's rare you see them enacted for a negotiating rights deal, and this has caused some confusion.
However, as Friedman plainly explained, Marner has the right to deny any sort of trade. Even those that would yield a measly sixth-round pick in return.
This probably isn't what Toronto Maple Leafs fans want to hear right now, but at the end of the day, it is the truth, and it is a truth that must be grappled with.
The Leafs and Marner have not ruled out a reunion for the next eight years, but regardless, it is still looking pretty unlikely, all things considered.
If you are a fan of the team, this is going to be a very difficult offseason for a number of reasons. Only time will tell whether or not the franchise figures it out.
Luckily, they have an entire month to make some big decisions and plan for what could be a rough future.
