Insider Confirms Exciting Timeline for John Tavares & Matthew Knies Signings

Toronto Maple Leafs stars John Tavares and Matthew Knies are in the market for new contracts, and it appears as though they might just get done sooner than you think.
John Tavares and Matthew Knies have been at the top of the Maple Leafs' to-do list this offseason as they are both in need of new contracts.
Tavares is an unrestricted free agent, while Knies is a restricted free agent. On July 1st, the former can go wherever he wants. Meanwhile, the most freedom Knies has is to sign an offer sheet.
By all accounts, the Leafs want to bring both of these players back, and for very good reason. Tavares had 38 goals last season, while Knies had 29. Letting them walk would be malpractice.
When will the Leafs sign John Tavares and Matthew Knies?
However, it seems like things are actually moving along quite nicely. A new report from James Mirtle suggests we could even see an announcement very soon.
As he explains, an extension for both players is in the works. Those extensions could be revealed as early as next week. For some fans, this may come as a bit of a surprise.
There was some trepidation about whether or not the Leafs wanted to keep their former captain, given the fact that general manager Brad Treliving wants to make changes to the team's DNA.
As for Matthew Knies, there were some fears that the Leafs and the young forward would be far apart as it pertains to the term of the contract.
Only time will tell whether or not Mirtle's report ends up coming true. Although, this is some encouraging news in light of everything we have been hearing about Mitch Marner.
This is going to be a stressful offseason, but bringing back Tavares and Knies before July 1st could very well ease some of the tensions that Leafs fans are feeling.
We do not envy the position Brad Treliving is in right now. It's never easy having to make big decisions that can have a huge, monumental impact on your team's future.
