The NHL Playoffs need to undergo some changes, and it would appear as though the retirement of Gary Bettman is going to bring forth some major fixes.
Ever since going to the division bracket NHL Playoffs format was introduced, fans have been yearning to go back to the 1-8 method.
However, there has also been a huge push for a play-in tournament, just like the NBA has. This adds games to the schedule, and it also adds intrigue.
However, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman has been hesitant to pull the trigger on this. Instead, it feels like he is somewhat against the idea.
Gary Bettman holding back the NHL Playoffs
In a recent report from Chris Johnston, it was revealed that the league would like to move to a play-in format, but Gary Bettman will probably have to retire first.
I can tell you internally the demand for that is so high; when there is a change in Commissioner.
I think it'll be one of the first major changes the league makes.
As for how the play-in tournament would work, you can find a detailed explanation below.
The 9th-place team hosts the 10th-place team, with the loser being eliminated.
The 7th place team hosts the 8th place team in the double-chance game, with the winner advancing as the new 7-seed.
The loser of the 7/8 game hosts the winner of the 9/10 game, with the winner receiving the new 8-seed.
At the end of the day, this would be a compelling idea for the NHL to pursue. Moreover, it would get rid of these Toronto-Boston and Toronto-Florida series every single year.
The league needs to fix the playoffs, and the play-in would be a good way to get the ball rolling officially.
Only time will tell whether or not the NHL goes through with it.
