Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan has a chance to make the team this season, and legendary NHL broadcaster Chris Cuthbert thinks it can happen.
Easton Cowan is a player who has NHL potential written all over him, but he actually has to make the Leafs roster first.
As it stands, the Maple Leafs have a lot to figure out, but with Cowan coming into training camp, there is one person who believes in him wholeheartedly.
Easton Cowan on the Toronto Maple Leafs
During an episode of 'Leafs Morning Take,' NHL broadcaster Chris Cuthbert made it clear that he believes people are beginning to underestimate Cowan.
I think everybody is sleeping on Easton Cowan. He had a tremendous camp two years ago when it was too early. Last year, we had all these expectations, but had a terrible camp, but he went back and went to work. He had an amazing season at junior.
While Cuthbert doesn't see Cowan being a top-six core kind of guy, he still thinks the forward is ready to play at the NHL level.
Clearly he's not ready to be a core guy, but I think under the right circumstances, he might be a piece in this puzzle. Every time I look at a Leafs roster that doesn't have Easton Cowan, I wonder why he's getting left out, because I think he's a guy that could make a difference.
A lot of this is going to depend on the preseason and whether or not Cowan has some good games against the Canadiens, Senators, and Red Wings.
If not, then Cowan will play in the AHL for the Toronto Marlies, where he will have an opportunity to develop his game.
Only time will tell whether or not this pick turns out to be a win for the Leafs, or a complete bust. It will probably be years before we know for sure.
