Toronto Maple Leafs forward Matthew Knies has been trying to get crafty with "The Michigan" and while it hasn't worked, he continues to try and be an innovator.
Matthew Knies has blossomed into a star this season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and there is no doubt that the fans love him very much.
On Saturday night against Columbus Blue Jackets, Knies picked up an assist, although he almost scored one of the most beautiful goals of his career.
Matthew Knies explains "The Michigan"
If you remember, the forward attempted what is called "The Michigan." For those who may not know, this is a Lacrosse style goal that begins behind the net and ends with a players scooping the puck on their stick and trying to feed the puck directly into the net.
Goaltenders hate it and the hockey establishment hates it too. But Knies tried it and ultimately failed. After the game, he spoke up about why he thought attempting the move was a good idea.
«The puck was kind of rolling so I thought it was a good opportunity there to do it. That's probably the closest I've ever come. It kind of sucks that it didn't go in there."
Knies had already tried it previously this season, but it ultimately did not work out for him and based on his comments, it never has.
It is one of those plays that is hit or miss and it is always difficult for a player to execute it at 100 percent efficiency.
Only time will tell what the kid is able to accomplish next. Let's just hope the Leafs keep him and sign him to the long-term contract he deserves.
