TSN 1050 'Overdrive' debated the merits of a Mitch Marner jersey retirement, and it has Toronto Maple Leafs fans spiraling all over social media.
At this point, everyone just has to calm down a bit and let the chips fall where they may. The forward is going to do what he wants, and there is nothing the fans can do to stop it.
Does Mitch Marner deserve to have his jersey retired?
In fact, 'Overdrive' on TSN 1050 decided to turn the debate up to 11, with an entire segment about whether or not Mitch Marner should have his jersey retired.
Given the lack of playoff success and the forward's constant games with the front office, the answer should be no. But Bryan Hayes and Jeff O'Neill seem to think it's plausible.
They even gave this a 33 percent chance of becoming a reality, which, if you ask us, is way too high and shouldn't even be considered genuinely.
Toronto Maple Leafs fans say no
In fact, the reception to this segment was incredibly negative. If you check out the tweets below, you can see just how ridiculous some people found this premise to be.
Overall, you cannot fault Maple Leafs fans for feeling this way. Marner has not accomplished anything of significance with this team. Instead, he was coddled and told "good job" for doing the bare minimum.
Sure, Marner had a career-high 102 points last season, but that doesn't mean anything when you disappear in the playoffs. He was awful down the stretch against the Florida Panthers, and that is what fans will remember.
In the coming weeks, we will get a better picture of what Marner is thinking right now and whether or not he will want to return to the team.
For some, a change of scenery might be best for all parties involved.
