New Details Emerge Surrounding Failed Toronto Maple Leafs & Las Vegas Golden Knights Trade

Last summer, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Las Vegas Golden Knights discussed a Mitch Marner trade, and these new details showcase the players almost involved.
Over the past week or so, there have been a plethora of rumors concerning Mitch Marner and his next NHL destination. One team that has been at the center of these rumors is the Las Vegas Golden Knights.
In fact, it would appear as though the Golden Knights have had some interest in Marner for a very long time, dating back to last summer.
It was even revealed that the Knights and Leafs had trade talks around the superstar winger, but they ultimately fell through as the Leafs had some major demands.

As we previously reported, the Leafs wanted none other than Shea Theodore, but the Golden Knights were unwilling to make that happen.
On 'The Sheet' with Jeff Marek, David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period offered up some new details on the failed trade. As he explains, the Leafs also wanted William Karlsson, but that would not work out either.
They had conversations last summer... My understanding is that William Karlsson was part of the discussion at one point, and he's got some no-trade protection. I believe that also played a factor in that whole discussion.
Overall, the Maple Leafs may just lose Mitch Marner for nothing, which would be pretty disastrous if you asked us. That is not the situation you want your franchise to be in.
Having said that, the Leafs have a lot of free agency options out there, and we trust the front office to make the right choices as July 1st approaches.
As for Marner, it seems pretty likely at this point that he is going to leave Toronto, regardless of what kind of dollar amount the team throws at him.
While it was a great partnership for many years, it does seem pretty clear that a divorce would benefit everyone involved.
