NHL insider Nick Kypreos offered up some interesting comments about Toronto Maple Leafs president Brendan Shanahan and his role with the franchise.
Overall, the team has been a consistent playoff contender but they always seem to falter in the first-round and there are very few reasons to believe that won't happen again this year.
Will MLSE get rid of Brendan Shanahan?
Recently, MLSE hired a new CEO in Keith Pelley and he is known for making big changes if the results simply aren't there.
Consequently,
NHL insider Nick Kypreos believes that if the Leafs don't show some progress in the playoffs this season, then Shanahan may as well start packing his bags.
"He has to show that everything over the last ten years is built into this season to make a long, deep playoff run. If it doesn't happen, I think he will be held accountable more than anyone else in the organization."
The Toronto Maple Leafs president is currently in the final year of his contract with the franchise, so MLSE wouldn't even need to fire him.
Instead, they could simply just refuse to extend his contract. One has to wonder who would then become the team's President given the high-profile nature of the role.
Regardless, this has not been a good situation for the Toronto Maple Leafs, whose fanbase is absolutely desperate for some kind of postseason success.
While Shanahan is probably feeling the pressure, there is only so much he can do short of putting the skates back on and trying to win games himself.
It is not an easy job and his situation is not an enviable one.
