Scout Reveals the Huge Mistake the Toronto Maple Leafs Made at the Trade Deadline

Sportsnet scout Jason Bukala recently had an interesting take about the Toronto Maple Leafs and their trade deadline move to acquire Brandon Carlo.
In order to obtain Brandon Carlo from the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs had to trade away Fraser Minten and a first-round pick in 2026.
A lot of fans liked Minten, although they understood that this was simply what happens when you need roster guys at the deadline.
Now, Sportsnet scout Jason Bukala is claiming that the Maple Leafs made a grave mistake and there is another prospect they should have traded instead.
While speaking to JD Bunkis, Bukala made the argument that as of right now, Fraser Minten is the better player, even if Cowan has more potential.
"Not great, but it was going to be the cost of doing business. At their current development stage, as crazy as it sounds, I thought maybe it was going to be Cowan [traded] over Minten... Minten's floor is higher than Cowan's, but his ceiling isn't as high as Cowan's."
Bukala just feels like it would make more sense to keep Minten right now because he is more of a sure thing.
"When I scouted both these players live, Minten's habits, in my comfort level with the higher floor, was more comfortable with Minten compared to the state of Cowan's game today."
At the end of the day, the Maple Leafs made a business decision and they can't have any regrets. It is simply too late for that.
Cowan is expected to be on the Maple Leafs roster next season and could become a great second-liner. Minten was destined to be a career third-line center which the Leafs don't really need.
Either way, it is going to be fascinating to watch whether or not Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan has the better career.
