Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan is someone with a ton of promise, and with development camp beginning this week, fans are eager to see him play.
Easton Cowan had a sensational season with the London Knights in 2024-25, and he was able to cap it all off with a Memorial Cup.
Now, his goal is clear. Make the Toronto Maple Leafs and begin what could be a very successful career in the National Hockey League.
Of course, that is a lot easier said than done. The Maple Leafs have some sensational players, and there is no guarantee that Cowan will show NHL readiness.
Easton Cowan looks to make the Toronto Maple Leafs
Interestingly enough, Cowan will not be taking part in on-ice activities at Maple Leafs development camp this week. The same goes for his Knights teammate Landon Sim.
According to Mark Masters, this is because of how much hockey they've played over the last few months. They have put a lot of pressure on their bodies, and the Leafs are being cautious.
Meanwhile, assistant general manager Hayley Wickenheiser confirmed that Cowan's assignment for the summer is clear: make the team. By all accounts, it does appear like the Leafs want Cowan to step in next year.
Time will tell. That's the question we're all asking ourselves. The money's on him that he'll be fit enough & prepared enough, the experience, to be able to step in and play. We'll see probably very quickly when camp starts.
If Cowan can play on the third line, or maybe even step in on the second line, and have success, then that will be huge for the Maple Leafs.
After losing Mitch Marner, they need guys who can come in and fill the void that was left behind. Cowan has the potential to be that guy; he just has to prove himself.
Hopefully, we get to see Cowan out on the ice soon. He is an exciting player, and we are looking forward to his future.
