Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is likely to leave the team on July 1st, and as a result, general manager Brad Treliving is looking to get creative as a way to protect the franchise.

With Mitch Marner likely leaving the Toronto Maple Leafs in a few weeks from now, it makes sense that the franchise would seek to protect itself.
Losing a superstar talent for nothing is a hard pill to swallow, and Leafs fans would be distraught if that turned out to be the outcome. Although in free agency, these things happen.
Regardless, the Leafs are trying to make something happen. If Marner wants an eight-year deal outside of Toronto, then a sign-and-trade is really his only option.

However, according to James Mirtle, Marner and his camp want nothing to do with the Leafs' plans. Instead, they are going to do what they want, Leafs be damned.
As a result, a sign-and-trade is looking very unlikely. However, Mirtle also noted that if a sign-and-trade does happen, then a second-round pick is probably going to be the maximum compensation.
On the JD Bunkis Show, Mirtle says there's some acrimony between TOR/Marner's camp and they would need to work together for a sign and trade

Most likely scenario is he goes to July 1 to see his offers-he doesn't want to give up that day

At most, TOR would get a 2nd-round pick
If the sign-and-trade were to happen with the Las Vegas Golden Knights, the Leafs could realistically get back William Karlsson, considering VGK needs to dump some salary.
However, that is wishful thinking at this point. Marner is going to do whatever he wants, whether the Toronto Maple Leafs like it or not.
It is a sad reality, but that is how these things go. Leafs fans are just going to have to live with it the best they can.
Meanwhile, general manager Brad Treliving will continue to work with what he has and improve this roster as we head into free agency on July 1st.
