The Toronto Maple Leafs are looking to acquire Bryan Rust from the Pittsburgh Penguins, although it is going to cost the team a ton of assets.
After losing
Mitch Marner in the offseason, everyone knew it would be tough for the Maple Leafs to replace him, and that has been especially true.
He is a phenomenal player who can get you a point-per-game under the right conditions. Not to mention, he is someone who has reportedly been on the trading block.
Can the Toronto Maple Leafs afford Bryan Rust
According to David Pagnotta on Sekeres and Price, the Penguins are not going to make it easy for the Leafs to acquire Rust.
Their asking price is high, as they want a top prospect, a first-round pick, and another asset on top of all of that.
You're talking about a top tier prospect, a first round pick and an additional asset, that might be on the low end depending on the time of year for either Rakell or Rust.
The Maple Leafs do not have a lot to give right now. While they could offer
Easton Cowan and
Ben Danford, that really does feel like overkill.
If they want to go for
Rickard Rakell instead, then they would have to deal with the exact same demands. Needless to say, general manager Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him.
Over the course of the season, it will be interesting to see whether or not the Maple Leafs can improve their roster with some top-tier forward talent.
