Joseph Woll and Anthony Stolarz were sensational with the Toronto Maple Leafs last season, however, the team might make an unpopular decision soon.
Last season, Joseph Woll had 27 wins, a goals-against average of 2.73, and a save percentage of .909. Meanwhile,
Anthony Stolarz had a goals-against average of 2.14 and a save percentage of .926.
Overall, this was a phenomenal showing from both goaltenders, however, it was not without its fair share of controversy come playoff time.
Will the Toronto Maple Leafs trade a goaltender?
With that in mind, Kevin Papetti of The Athletic has made a suggestion that is probably goint to be unpopular to a lot of Maple Leafs fans out there.
Effectively, he believes that the Leafs could consider a goalie trade this offseason. Why? Because it would open up cap space for a viable forward who can contribute offensively.
The more I think about the Leafs' offseason, the more I wonder if they'll trade a goalie. There's obvious risk involved, but contending teams rarely keep that much value in the backup goaltender spot. It's a clear path to adding a good forward on a team-friendly deal.
The big problem with this idea is that Stolarz and Woll are too injury-prone for this kind of plan to actually work. If one of them goes down, you are stuck with a backup and a third-stringer.
Last season, Woll and Stolarz were injured for long stretches, and the other was able to take the workload and carry the team forward.
That simply will not be possible if one of them is no longer on the roster. It's harsh, but that is just the truth. The Leafs would have to acquire a very good backup for cheap.
With free agency abou to begin in a few weeks from now, it will be very interesting to see what general manager Brad Treliving decides.
