Toronto Maple Leafs forward David Kampf decided to stop traveling with the Toronto Marlies, and now, he is facing the tough consequences of that decision.
He doesn't want to play in the AHL, and with no NHL opportunities with the Leafs in the cards, Kampf is showing his displeasure by threatening to terminate his contract.
Well, with things boiling over, the
Maple Leafs opted to take the nuclear option today in hopes that they can get a resolution soon.
Toronto Maple Leafs lay down the law on David Kampf
According to Puck Pedia, Kampf has been suspended without pay. This means his cap hit will not count for the Leafs.
However, there is a catch here. The Leafs are only doing this because they believe there is a quick solution to this situation.
According to league sources, David Kampf is suspended without pay by [the Leafs] for leaving their AHL team, & therefore the Leafs are not currently incurring the $1.25M buried Cap Charge for him while in the minors.
That solution could go one of three ways. Kampf could either return to the Marlies roster, get traded, or have his contract terminated.
The Leafs have been working on a trade for months at this point, but nothing has been able to materialize.
Quite frankly, the most human thing to do at this point would be to terminate the contract and allow Kampf to test out his market value.
It is a very unfortunate situation, but when you let things like this go on too long, this is what ends up happening.
