Toronto Maple Leafs Urged to Trade Auston Matthews by Overzealous Insider

Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs have not had a ton of playoff success over the last decade or so.

They have only managed a grand total of two playoff series wins and have never made it past the second round. This season, they came close, although they ended up losing in seven games to the Florida Panthers.

Now, the Leafs are looking to change their DNA this offseason. That means pending free agent Mitch Marner is probably on his way out. The same can be said about John Tavares, although many believe the Leafs would at least like to retain their former captain for a few more seasons.

As for Auston Matthews, one would assume that he is not going anywhere. He is the team's captain and he is one of the best scorers the game has ever seen. In fact, his career is already matching that of Alex Ovechkin, which means a Cup could come eventually.

Regardless, NHL reporter John Shannon wants the Leafs to blow it all up. On 'Leafs Morning Take,' he argued that these guys cannot win together.

It is a harsh assessment and one that some Leafs fans can at least halfway agree with. That said, trading your captain and franchise player is not the answer.

There are other guys the Leafs can bring in to improve this team, including Brad Marchand, Sam Bennett, and even Jonathan Toews.

The Leafs are an organization that has made it crystal clear they want to win. Now, they actually have to go out there and execute.

Needless to say, general manager Brad Treliving is going to have his hands full this summer, especially once July 1st finally hits.
