In a few months from now, Mitch Marner will be returning to Toronto to take on the Maple Leafs for the first time as a member of the Las Vegas Golden Knights.

Yesterday, the Toronto Maple Leafs' schedule was officially revealed to the public, and there were some interesting tidbits at play here.
Of course, most fans were waiting to see when Mitch Marner would be returning to the Scotiabank Arena for the first time. This matchup will take place on January 23rd, although we already have some controversy.
According to reports, the Las Vegas Golden Knights will play against the Boston Bruins the night before. This means Marner won't take part in a morning skate, and he won't even have to do media following the Leafs' game.
Simply put, Marner gets to have his cake and eat it too, which has upset a whole section of the Leafs fanbase.

Bryan Hayes is mad at the NHL

TSN 1050 host Bryan Hayes was especially outraged by all of this, as he took aim at the NHL on "OverDrive" last night.
He feels as though the league has taken what could have been a massive game, and has turned it into a farce.
The build up to the game is going to be about Marner. I think it will be the most anticipated Maple Leaf homecoming likely in my lifetime. I said that the NHL will screw this up and they did. They screwed it up because Vegas is in Boston the night before, which means they'll fly in late, not have a morning skate, he'll play, I'm not even convinced he's going to talk to the media afterwards, and then he's going to be out.

I get why Vegas wants to protect Marner. I get why Marner is like 'this is amazing for me, get me in, get me out.' I get why, to an extent, the league would be sympathetic to that, but as I said yesterday, you're in the entertainment business. This is a massive profile. This is a local kid, leaving town, coming back to the biggest hockey market on earth. They're going to fly him in, like the dark knight, fly him out.

This does feel like it might be a bit of an exaggeration, all things considered. Although it does show that the Leafs have the fanbase in the palm of their hand.
Fans want to see Marner face the wrath of Scotiabank Arena, and they also want him to face the media.
As it turns out, we might just have to wait until 2027 for all of that to become reality.
