Wayne Gretzky Explains How he Really Feels About Alexander Ovechkin's Scoring Record Chase
NHL legend Wayne Gretzky is about to have his NHL scoring record broken and Alexander Ovechkin has acted with class throughout the entire process.
Going into last night's Washington Capitals and Chicago Blackhawks game,
Alexander Ovechkin needed two goals to tie Wayne Gretzky's record and he three to break it.
Gretzky was in attendance for the game with Gary Bettman and he will be doing so until Ovi comes through and breaks the record, once and for all.
Wayne Gretzky talks Alexander Ovechkin
During the game, Gretzky was interviewed by reporters who asked him what this achievement would mean to the league, and how he feels about his record being broken.
In a moment of honesty, Gretzky noted how this is amazing for the game of hockey and that Gordie Howe was there for all of his records. As a result, he wants to be there for Ovechkin.
«When I was breaking Gordie Howe's record, he was there. And I said 2 years ago that if Alex gets close to my record, I'll be here.»
Having your records broken can be an ego damaging moment, so it is cool to see Gretzky not having an ego about it.
Instead, he is allowing this to happen, knowing that this is just the circle of life when it comes to the National Hockey League.
We are just happy to see Ovechkin thriving at the age of 39. On Sunday, if Ovi breaks the record, he will have more goals than Gretzky in the same amount of games, which feels absolutely absurd given Wayne's era.
Either way, the NHL is in a great place and it is because of superstars like Alexander Ovechkin who have played the game with class and longevity.
