$20 Million Goalie Presents Unique Opportunity for the Toronto Maple Leafs

Boston Bruins goaltender Joonas Korpisalo is supposedly on the trading block, and the Toronto Maple Leafs could very well be a factor in those trade talks.
Yesterday, it was reported by James Murphy that Boston Bruins goalie
Joonas Korpisalo could very well be on his way out of the franchise.
The goalie is going into the third year of his five-year, $20 million deal, and with a goals-against average of 2.90 and a save percentage below .900,
he just isn't worth the money. Interestingly enough, the Toronto Maple Leafs could very well be a team interested in Korpisalo. While some may find that ridiculous, given they have
Anthony Stolarz and
Joseph Woll on the roster, you need to hear us out.
Toronto Maple Leafs could make Joonas Korpisalo work
Given the Leafs' investment in Joseph Woll, keeping Stolarz on the team might not be the right move. Meanwhile, Korpisalo has proven to be one of the better backups in the NHL.
Bringing in Korpisalo would save the Leafs money in the long run. Not to mention, with NHL goalies at a premium, they could flip Korpisalo into something much greater, later on down the line.
It's also important to remember that the Leafs have assets they want to get rid of. Nick Robertson,
David Kampf, and
Calle Jarnkrok are all potential bargaining chips.
Additionally, if the Boston Bruins were to retain some salary, that would work in the Leafs' favor as well. Although the Bruins are a rival, it's unclear whether they would help Toronto out.
While this does feel like a stretch right now, it might actually be the right move. Regardless, it is one that would require deep reflection on the part of general manager Brad Treliving.
Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs make any big moves prior to the start of the regular season.
