Nicolas Roy is a player who is going to be centering the third line this season for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Nicolas Roy makes a statement with the Toronto Maple Leafs
In a piece from David Alter of The Hockey News, Roy explained his decision to go with this unconventional number, which has only been used twice before in Maple Leafs history. The first was by Jason Blake, and then by Mark Giordano.
Essentially, when he was 14 years old, Roy was picked last on a team and was then promptly given the number 55, which stuck.
«I ended up with 55 and was kind of surprised a little bit and didn't really like it at first," Roy said. "But by the time I played two years with it and then got to juniors, I picked it for four years. Then when I got to Vegas, obviously 55 was already picked, so I picked 10 and obviously couldn't get 10 in Toronto, so I went back with 55".
55 was already being used in Las Vegas, and he went with the number 10. However, that number is retired by the Maple Leafs right now, thanks to George Armstrong.
Now, Roy will get to relive his junior glory days by sporting his old number. Whether or not this motivates him to play his best hockey remains to be seen.
If one thing is for certain, it is that the fans in Toronto cannot wait to see Roy take to the ice and showcase his talents.
We wish the kid the best of luck going into this season. Hopefully, the expectations aren't too heavy for him.
