Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews was not impressed with his team's performance against the San Jose Sharks and he made sure to let them know.
Auston Matthews is the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs this season and he is trying to lead the team to its first Atlantic Division title in decades.
However, there have been numerous roadblocks along the way especially thanks to avoidable losses like the one from last night where the Leafs lost 6-5 in a shootout.
The San Jose Sharks are the worst team in the NHL and losing to them in this manner is simply unacceptable.
Auston Matthews goes off on the Toronto Maple Leafs
Matthews is very much aware of this and his comments after last night's game are a good indication that he is self-aware about the situation.
In fact, he laid into his team a little bit, noting that the effort isn't there and that the team is taking it too easy on weaker teams.
"I didn't love our game tonight. We just seemed slow. We didn't seem to take care of the puck much. We were just kind of messing around with it too much. They are a young, skilled, hungry team despite where they are at in the standings. They are playing hard every night. Also, the special teams penalty trouble we got into - especially in the middle of the game - is just stuff that is controllable by us. It needs to be better."
Overall, it is good to see Matthews hold the team accountable, especially given just how important all of these games are right now.
There are only about 10 games left in the NHL regular season and every point is going to count from here on out.
If the Leafs want to win the Atlantic, then they better win these upcoming games against the Los Angeles Kings and Anaheim Ducks.
Not to mention, they play the Florida Panthers next week which is going to be extremely important if this team wants to go anywhere.
