Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews was recently asked about the Mitch Marner contract situation and it led to a truly fascinating answer.
Auston Matthews became the captain last summer and for a lot of people, this was a controversial decision as it took the captaincy away from John Tavares.
However, Tavares took this in stride while Matthews has attempted to prove to everyone that he is a good leader who can take this Leafs team to the next level.
So far, he has been doing well in his role and the Leafs look like a team that may actually get over the hump and have some playoff success.

Something that Matthews and the Leafs have had to deal with this season is the contract situation surrounding Mitch Marner.
While speaking to the media over the weekend, Matthews was asked about Marner and all of the rumors that have followed the forward this season.
The captain gave a great answer to the question and in one soundbite, proved to everyone why he deserves to be the captain of this team.
"It's not easy going through all the chaos that can be around him and the season and everything. But I think he's handled everything amazing. His focus is on hockey. It's on the team. And he's a guy that goes out there and gives a great effort every night. He's just going to continue to elevate his game here as we go along this final stretch."
This is the kind of leadership and diplomacy that the team needs going into the postseason as the Maple Leafs attempt to go on a deep run.
Fans have been yearning for some success for decades now and with the Eastern Conference wide open, it feels like something good might finally happen here.
Of course, the Leafs need Matthews to be himself which has not been easy for him this season given a nagging injury. Only time will tell what the Leafs can do.
