Toronto Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews has been loving life as of late and he couldn't help but appreciate the contributions of Chris Tanev.
Auston Matthews is the captain of the Toronto Maple Leafs which means he has to be incredibly observant about his team and how each guy is playing.
Last night against the Tampa Bay Lightning, it felt like the whole team was playing on another level, and the overtime win helped solidify that.
Perhaps the most shocking part of the win, however, was the fact that the Leafs finished with 33 blocked shots, a single-game franchise record.
Auston Matthews loves Chris Tanev
A lot of this was thanks to defenseman Chris Tanev, who in just one season, has set the single-season Leafs record for blocked shots.
Tanev has proven to be incredibly underrated and on Wednesday night, Matthews gave the defenseman his proper due. These comments speak volumes to the kind of player Tanev is.
«I mean, you pick up a guy like Chris Tanev - he blocks multiple shots every game. It's a willingness to commit to that and sacrifice the body and get in shot lanes and try to make it as easy on our goalies as possible.»
At the end of the day, there is no telling what kind of heights Tanev will reach come playoff time.
What we do know is that despite being underrated, there are some who would say that he is the best defenseman on the team and one of the best signings ever made by Brad Treliving.
With the Atlantic Division race heating up, it is clear than ever that Tanev has been an instrumental part of this team.
The same can be said for Auston Matthews, whose production has been kicked into overdrive as the season nears its conclusion.
