Pat Maroon won a Stanley Cup with Craig Berube on the St. Louis Blues so you can imagine the coach has some sentimental feelings about the retiring forward.
Overall, the fans remember this Cup run very fondly and there is no doubt that
Maroon was a huge part of it, even if he wasn't the biggest offensive contributor.
Now, the forward is set to retire after a long and improbable run in the NHL. It has been emotional to watch and Berube was recently asked about his former player.
Craig Berube on Pat Maroon
As you can imagine, the Toronto Maple Leafs head coach has a lot of fond memories of Maroon and knows just how good the player is.
That said, he also noted that he has texted the player and has wished him well as he enters this next chapter of his life. He also offered some really nice compliments.
"Patty's a winner. And he's a great teammate. I texted him, and those are the two things I told him. I don't think there's a bigger compliment, personally, as a hockey player."
It is always hard to retire and let go from the thing that you have done your entire life. Maroon has been a great professional and the NHL is going to miss him.
As for Berube, he is currently in the midst of a great season with the Toronto Maple Leafs who are about to embark on what could be a playoff run for the ages.
Of course, the team actually has to go out and execute. First off, win the Atlantic Division. Secondly, they have to win their first-round matchup up which is likely to be against the Ottawa Senators.
Only time will tell whether or not the Leafs can keep the good times rolling or find themselves back to where they have always been historically.
