Sportsnet analyst Elliotte Friedman came through with a fascinating account of how the Toronto Maple Leafs were able to land NCAA free agent Luke Haymes.
This past week, the Toronto Maple Leafs were able to make a big splash on the free agent market as they signed Luke Haymes from Dartmouth College.
He is an offensive-minded young talent who has the potential to do some big things with the Leafs, and he could also play center if asked of him.

According to Elliotte Friedman on
32 Thoughts, it was revealed that Haymes was also being pursued by the Tampa Bay Lightning who were very serious about acquiring his services.
However, this did not work out as intended, and the Leafs got the young forward. Why? Well, as Friedman explains, the Leafs were able to sell him on a much better dream.
"I heard in Haymes' case, in particular, the Leafs said to him, 'We're going to need young centers'... and they really sold him. I heard Tampa Bay went at this kid pretty hard and I think Toronto really sold him on, 'There's an opening for a 3C potentially on this team and we'll give you a chance to get it.'"
Needless to say, the Leafs are being crafty as they try to build out their prospect group down in the American Hockey League.
While most fans are concerned with the playoffs and winning some games down the stretch, it is important to remember that the future is being secured.
We cannot wait to see how all of this is going to end up playing out over the coming years. The future is bright in Toronto.
