Recently, the Toronto Maple Leafs signed John Prokop and Luke Haymes and it is all thanks to a little-known loophole present in the NHL's CBA.

Over the past week, General Manager Brad Treliving and assistant General Manager Brandon Pridham made some big moves involving free agents from the NCAA.
Both players are set to make their AHL debuts with the Toronto Marlies this weekend, and fans are excited to see what these players might do over the coming years.

John Prokop and Luke Haymes signed on a bargain

According to Elliotte Friedman on the latest episode of 32 Thoughts, it was revealed that both Prokop and Haymes were signed to $875K AAV deals.
While this sounds like a lot, it is actually a full $100K lower than what the typical entry level contract is supposed to be.
Why is that? Well, Pridham and Treliving were both able to expose a little known loophole in the CBA that allows them to get their free agent targets at a discount.
"This isn't the first time that the Maple Leafs have done this... there's a rule in there that's called the roster emergency exception and, basically, what it means is that a team can recall a player from the AHL without counting their cap hit in an emergency if the player's cap hit is at least $100,000 below the rookie maximum. Next year's rookie maximum is $975,000, so if the Maple Leafs are at the cap and suddenly they find themselves in an emergency situation, both Haymes and Prokop can be called up without their cap hit counting because they're $100,000 below the cap. That's why it was done that way."

"One of the things the Maple Leafs sell is that they say 'hey, next year iF we get into an emergency cap situation, it increases the chances of you being called up because you are under this number,' and that's why those players were convinced to doing it. Someone also said to me if you take a look at the PTOs, they both signed PTOs for this year, they also get paid to play under those PTOs, so you make up some of that money by playing this year but that's the reason why those two players agreed to it."

This is obviously great for the Leafs and it gives Prokop and Haymes more potential opportunities to be called up.
Moreover, it shows that the Maple Leafs are doing everything they can to optimize their lineup.
You have to appreciate the ingenuity, and we hope that Haymes and Prokop turn out to be solid NHLers.
