Former Toronto Maple Leafs Player Suspended Overseas Due to Stunning Allegations
Former Toronto Maple Leafs player Miro Aaltonen is currently playing in Switzerland for Kloten HC, although his season is in jeopardy after being suspended.
Miro Aaltonen played for the Toronto Marlies during the 2017-18 campaign which just so happens to be the year that the AHL Maple Leafs affiliate won the Calder Cup.
Since that time, Aaltonen has been playing overseas in leagues such as the KHL and Swiss-A.
Miro Aaltonen suspended from Kloten HC
According to a report from Swiss Hockey News, Aaltonen has been suspended from Kloten HC for an indefinite amount of time due to allegations of doping.
In fact, the Finnish player is currently being investigated by Swiss Sport Integrity.
"Miro Aaltonen, currently a player of EHC Kloten but a member of SC Bern next season, has been provisionally suspended by the single judge following the opening of an investigation from Swiss Sport Integrity concerning a potential anti-doping rule violation.
The organization confirms the ongoing process but explains that it cannot reveal any details until the end of the investigation."
Aaltonen has since commented on his suspension, noting that this all stems from a nightclub incident in which he took an unnamed substance for entertainment purposes.
The implications here are pretty clear, although Aaltonen acknowledges that what he took just so happens to be on the banned list.
"During the pre-Christmas break, I was in a nightclub and apparently used, for entertainment purposes, a substance that does not enhance performance but is banned in sport.
I will seek help and I assume the consequences of my actions, reports SST. As soon as I am authorized to do so, I wish to return to my work. I offer my most sincere apologies for what I did to my loved ones and to HC Kloten, to the fans and teammates."
It is great to see Aaltonen taking responsibility and seeking help for whatever off-ice issues he may have.
We wish him nothing but the best moving forward and we hope he can eventually make his return to the league.
