Insider Delivers Sobering Update on Where Things Stand Between Mitch Marner & the Toronto Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner is in the midst of a contract negotiation and according to one insider, things have not been looking all that great.
There have been a ton of rumors surrounding Mitch Marner and the Toronto Maple Leafs as of late.
A lot of it started on Saturday when it was revealed that the superstar forward refused a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes for Mikko Rantanen.
This led to the revelation that Marner and the Leafs are far apart in contract negotiations and that it is very likely for him to test free agency come the summer.

However, a new report from Chris Johnston of TSN and The Athletic suggests that the reporters and analysts have it all wrong right now.
The Leafs and Marner can't be far apart in terms of negotiations because those negotiations have not happened. Instead, the two are only going to talk once the season is over.
"The Maple Leafs and Mitch Marner haven't negotiated his next contract at all, but they want him on the team long-term."
This is actually very much in line with what Marner had said prior to the start of the season.
He noted that his contract negotiation was not something that he wanted to talk about and that he was going to continue doing what he was doing.
Overall, it is an interesting strategy and it has caused all sorts of anxiety amongst Leafs fans.
However, Mitch Marner's 80 points in 63 games have certainly softened the blow, at least a little bit.
Only time will tell whether or not the forward comes back and if he does so for a cost that is friendly to the Leafs franchise.
