The NHL Draft and Free Agency are coming up fast, and as a result, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has been hard at work for his team.

Brad Treliving might just have the hardest job of any general manager in the National Hockey League right now, thanks to everything going on with his team.
The Leafs' GM has to deal with Mitch Marner potentially leaving the franchise. Meanwhile, he also has to figure out what to do with guys like John Tavares and Matthew Knies.
Overall, this is a lot to put on one man's plate, and it is not going to get any easier, especially with the draft and free agency on the horizon.

Brad Treliving's plans for the Toronto Maple Leafs

According to a new piece from James Mirtle of The Athletic, there is a path for Treliving to have a manageable offseason. He just has to focus on what's important.
As Mirtle explains, rebuilding the roster isn't necessary. Instead, the general manager will look for holes in the lineup as it pertains to the Core Four's supporting cast. From there, he will bring in new talent and address the team's big issues.
The next steps in Toronto shouldn't be the mass destruction of the roster. For one, that's not even going to be possible, not with free agency coming fast and so much of this group under contract, with no-movement and no-trade clauses.

What GM Brad Treliving and his staff need to do instead is to try to identify how they can change the cast around the core members who stay in such a way that it resets the environment and allows them to be better in critical situations. Watch those playoff failures and analyze the team's shortcomings - not just with the core, but at every position, up and down the lineup.

While this is a solid way of looking at things, making your roster perfect is an impossible task, even for the best general managers.
There are only a finite number of resources available, and the Leafs must figure out which players will actually suit their goals the best.
It is a complicated situation to navigate, albeit one that a lot of fans are empathetic towards.
Either way, this is going to be a fascinating few weeks for the franchise.
