Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has been working hard as of late and today, he signed Blake Smith from the Flint Firebirds of the OHL.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have been looking to build out their prospect pool and more recently, they have been going after talent in the NCAA.
However, today, the Maple Leafs announced another signing, this time from the Flint Firebirds of the Ontario Hockey League.
Below, you can see that the Maple Leafs signed defenseman
Blake Smith to a three-year entry level deal that will begin next season.
Blake Smith is a 6'5" defenseman who weighs 225 pounds and shoots with his left hand. Overall, this is the kind of defenseman that the Toronto Maple Leafs need if they want to continue building their blueline.
Who has Blake Smith played for
Smith is currently in his fourth and final year of OHL eligibility. He used to play for the Oshawa Generals but was traded in his second season to the Flint Firebirds.
Every single season, the defenseman has been able to improve upon his point totals and this season, he has shown he can be an offensive force.
In 64 games this season, Smith has 10 goals and 32 points which is solid production. It is this kind of production that had the Leafs looking to guarantee his services.
Of course, next season, it is likelier than not that Smith will be relegated to the AHL where he would play with the Toronto Marlies.
However, that will not be a problem for the team as the more prospects the merrier.
