Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving is negotiating a new deal with Matthew Knies, but he's been here before with Matthew Tkachuk, and it went poorly.
Brad Treliving and Matthew Knies have a lot to figure out right now. They are negotiating a new deal, and there is a debate over whether or not it should be long-term or a bridge.
Treliving has been here before. Years ago, as general manager of the Calgary Flames, the general manager found himself negotiating with RFA Matthew Tkachuk. In the end, Tkachuk was only signed to a three-year deal.
Years later, Tkachuk would end up leaving. Now, he is a Stanley Cup champion with the Florida Panthers.
Craig Button with a warning for Brad Treliving
During an appearance on 'Leafs Morning Take,' Craig Button warned Brad Treliving not to make the same mistake twice.
«Tkachuk only signed his contract, I believe, on the night or two before the regular season started,» Button said. «He was holding out, and it ended up being a three-year contract. Now, my understanding is all Tkachuk was asking for was the Draisaitl contract. And if you go back and look at where Matthew Tkachuk was at that time compared to where Draisaitl was when he signed that contract. That would have been a phenomenal contract for Matthew Tkachuk and the Calgary Flames. Brad went the short term, he ended up losing Mathew Tkachuk.»
In the end, the hockey analyst is firm in his belief that Knies should get signed to some kind of long-term deal.
«So I think with Matthew Knies, that type of player, I mean we use all kinds of descriptors, unicorn, unique, on what he brings to the table. I think if anything, the Matthew Tkachuk situation should be a guideline for Brad Treliving to sign him for eight years,» Button said.
An eight-year deal at $8 million per season seems pretty reasonable as far as eight-year contracts go. However, it is not going to be so easy.
Matthew Knies has previously stated that he wants to remain in Toronto for the long haul, so hopefully that motivates both sides to get a long-term deal done.
Only time will tell whether or not that is going to possible. We just don't want a repeat of previous Maple Leafs stars.
