Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner may not re-sign with the franchise and now, there is one reporter who believes he is on his way to a Wild Card team.
There is a fear right now amongst Maple Leafs fans that Mitch Marner is going to ditch the team in free agency, regardless of how the playoffs go.
Athletic reporter Jeremy Rutherford dropped an interesting piece today, claiming that Marner could very well come to the St. Louis Blues.
Robert Thomas plays for the team which is significant as the two were teammates on the London Knights of the OHL.
Marner would be an incredible fit for the Blues. He'd have to change his number because No. 16 is in the rafters at Enterprise Center, but as I've written before, Marner playing alongside Thomas, his old junior teammate, might lead to some magic like back in the day with Brett Hull.
However, Rutherford did note that the price of Marner is quite steep, even if $14 million is worth it with the current salary cap conditions.
The issue is Marner is going to get paid. He will be the premier UFA this offseason if unsigned by the Leafs, and the cost could be $14 million AAV. Could the Blues afford the winger, who turns 28 in May? He'd be quite the addition, but it takes two parties. If he's somehow interested, they would have to be.
If one thing is for certain, it is that Maple Leafs fans are worried about Mitch Marner. They believe he is gone and his lack of negotiations this season is further proof of that.
Hopefully, the Leafs go on a deep playoff run and prove to Marner that Toronto is the only place for him to be.
