NHL insider Darren Dreger recently gave an interesting update on Toronto Maple Leafs defensemen Jake McCabe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson who are injured.

Jake McCabe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson have both missed some time with injuries over the past few games and with the playoffs on the horizon, this can be concerning.
In fact, the team had to call up Dakota Mermis just so that they would have a sixth defenseman in the lineup.

Jake McCabe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson remain out

Thankfully, there was a big update from Darren Dreger today that should put a lot of Maple Leafs fans at ease going forward.
As he explains, both defenseman are day-to-day and that they are expected to be back for Game 1 of the playoffs. However, they may get rested for the final two games of the season as the Leafs are almost guaranteed the Atlantic Division.
Jake McCabe and Oliver Ekman-Larsson are both considered day-to-day, and it doesn't sound like there's anything serious going on. Ideally, both would be healthy and in the lineup, but with some time before the playoffs, the team is making use of it. It also gives other players a chance to step up - for example, a player like Morgan Rielly, who had a great game against Carolina.

Even though the team was largely understaffed in that game, there were still some bright spots. There's no real sense that either McCabe or OEL are dealing with anything that would put Game 1 of the playoffs in jeopardy.

So while the Leafs may deal with a bit of adversity for a game or two, it's not viewed as a major concern.
This will definitely quell the concerns of Maple Leafs fans who are scared to death of the prospect of the Leafs missing two of their best defenseman in the playoffs.
We are now at a time of the season when things can, indeed, be pretty scary, but it is clear that the Leafs have a plan.
Once McCabe and OEL come back, this team will be well on its way to some playoff success, or at least that is what the fans are praying for.
Only time will tell whether or not this is the year where the Leafs can exercise that "choker" narrative.
